Teregroup is pleased to announce the publication between August 22 and 23 of two new articles by Dr. Lutzu concerning the applications of microalgae
The first “Engineering strategies of microalgal cultivation for potential jet fuel production – A critical review” published in the prestigious Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering is the result of a substantial body of work that, as Teregroup’s research manager, Dr. Lutzu coordinated together with Prof. Concas of the University of Cagliari and involving colleagues from the University of Naples Federico II, Sapienza University of Rome, University of Pisa, Delaware State University, and the University of Riga
The paper critically analyzes algal cultivation techniques and strategies for lipid accumulation in microalgae aimed at obtaining biodiesel for use in the aviation sector
The second paper “Mixotrophic Cultivation of Arthrospira platensis (Spirulina) under Salt Stress: Effect on Biomass Composition, FAME Profile and Phycocyanin Content” published in the journal Marine Drugs and based on the dissertations of two thesis students that Dr. Lutzu supervised during their internship at Teregroup, concerns the effect of salt stress on the production of a potent antioxidant (phycocyanin) produced by the alga Spirulina, which is of considerable interest to the pharmaceutical industry given its useful properties in counteracting the onset and spread of cellular tumors. The work, in addition to the Teregroup team, has the collaboration of Prof. Concas of the University of Cagliari and Prof. Nieri of the University of Pisa, as well as researchers from the University of Cagliari and from Italian laboratories and Swiss companies.
